Things to do in Marrakech
Marrakech or ”Murrakush” as called in Arabic is the Jewel of the south, and the most visited city in Morocco. For those visiting Marrakech for the first time and interested in an excursion, guided city tour, or a day trip out of Marrakech, please find below a local travel company’s advice on the best things to do in Marrakech:
– Visit Jamaa Elfna Square:
The ” Square of death ” in Arabic, and no one really knows where this name came from. It is one of the mot famous and busiest sites in Morocco. In the morning, it is an open air theatre where story tellers, acrobats, fire eaters, musicians, water sellers, snake charmers fight to get the tourists’ attention. In the afternoon, it turns into an open air restaurants with BBQ smoke filling the horizon.
– Visit Majorelle Gardens:
Majorelle gardens have become a must see for any one visiting Marrakech. the Gardens were first built by the French architect Jacques Majorelle, who imported exotic plants from all over the world to his residence, then acquired by Yves Saint Laurent in the 70s. There is a very interesting Berber heritage museum annexed to the gardens that is worth a visit.
– Day trip to the Atlas Mountains & Toubkal National Park:
Only an hour drive from the city, but worlds apart! Magnificent scenery of snow topped Atlas Mountains, green lush valleys, and Berber villages that haven’t changed their lifestyle dating to centuries ago.
– Day trip to Essaouira:
Essaouira, or Mogador, as it was called back in history is a beautiful breath taking coastal town located east of Marrakech. It is worth a 2 hours drive each way thanks to its Portuguese style fortifications, walled town, fishing port, art galleries, and above all, a well deserved seafood lunch.
– Visit the Souks & markets in the Medina:
Marrakech Souks are a very unique experience! you can spend days in there, and still you won’t get enough of it. It is a maze of tiny, busy and colorful streets. busy craftsmen shops are also worth a visit.
